Dental Examinations in Burton On trent.

The topic of Oral Cancer has recently been raised in the press. Cancer Research Uk has urged dentists to take more of an active role in fighting the disease. Every year in Europe, around 100,800 people are diagnosed with head and neck cancer and almost 40,000 die from the disease.

Cancer Research is asking dentists to ask their patients about lifestyle risk factors such as smoking and drinking.

Patients of our practice here in Swadlincote Derbyshire will be well aware that this is something that we have been doing for many years now.

Our dentists will ask their patients if they smoke and if so how many, they will also ask how many units of alcohol are consumed per week. This doesn’t necessarily mean following up with a lecture it is simply vital for us to know and our responsibility to highlight you to the dangers.

Smoking and drinking alcohol are two of the main risk factors of oral cancer, all our staff are able to offer advice on how to stop and we have connections with local cessation agencies that we work closely with.

Our patients will also know that when you attend for regular examinations it is not just your teeth that we check. Our dentists carry out a thorough examination of your soft tissues including your lips, tongue, cheek lining, gums, palate and floor of the mouth looking for early symptoms such as sores, lumps or ulcers.

Here at Alexandra Dental Care all of our staff are committed to the early detection and prevention of oral cancer and regularly attend on-going training sessions.

If you would like to discuss mouth cancer and the risk factors involved please do not hesitate to contact us.
