Helping you plan your smile improvements over the coming year

First of all, a Happy New Year to all of our patients, whether from Swadlincote, Burton or Ashby. We hope that you all had a great break whilst looking after your teeth and gums at the same time! We are always happy to help, whether that be a check-up or an appointment with the hygienist at Alexandra Dental Care.

Now that things are returning to normal, we thought that it might help some of you who are looking to boost your smile in 2023, to help you plan the best time to have the various procedures that we offer. Naturally, this is only a guide and treatments are available at all times of the year, so if you have a mid winter wedding planned, we can still whiten your teeth to give you that optimum smile for the big day.

Winter

Winter is a time that, once the Christmas and new festivities are over, can be a period of semi hibernation. There might be the odd birthday celebration but by and large, we probably go out less at this time of the year than any other, especially when the weather is bad. Treatments such as teeth whitening are perhaps less popular at this time of the year as we are meeting less people. This can be a good time though for those treatments that take a little longer to complete, for example dental implants and some orthodontic treatments.

Dental implants can be placed in a day but there is approximately a three month period where the implant bonds with the bone it has been placed into. Until this has happened, the crown can not be added so a gap will be left in the teeth, so this quieter time might be a good opportunity to consider this popular tooth replacement method.

Another treatment which can take several weeks is for minor orthodontic correction. This is usually what we refer to as a cosmetic improvement. An example of this would be where front teeth are slightly overlapping and spoiling a smile that you would otherwise be happy with. Whilst some orthodontic problems can take a year or more to correct, cosmetic problems such as these can sometimes be corrected in a few weeks using systems such as the Inman Aligner. If you arrange your treatment now, you may be able to have a nice even smile by the time the warmer spring weather arrives.

Spring

Although it can be argued that we are less intertwined with nature than we used to be, many of us would agree that when spring arrives, we often feel like we are ‘waking up’, perhaps as we leave the darker nights behind us. This is a time when we might start to go out more and so, fast acting treatments to boost the smile are popular at this time of the year. Examples of this might include teeth whitening, but also dental veneers for teeth that are either more heavily stained or have small flaws such as chips or cracks. Coming out of the winter period where we may have eaten too many high sugar comfort foods, this might be a good time to book your hygienist appointment if you don’t already have one. After all, you would want to start to mix again with bad breath caused by gum disease, would you?

Summer

The most obvious treatment to have at this time of the year is our popular teeth whitening treatment. Social occasions, especially outdoors, are likely to be at a peak at this time of the year so an attractive smile is becoming a ‘must have’. Our fast acting and painless teeth whitening procedure can make sure that you have a significantly whiter smile as we enter this season of sun and socialising. To give your appearance that extra boost, you might also like to consider a facial aesthetics treatment. This is a great way to have smoother and younger looking skin.

Autumn

This can be a beautiful season with colours changing, but it can also signal a return of the cooler damper weather, and consequently, many social occasions will tail off at this time of the year. Naturally, treatments like tooth whitening are still available, but you might want to look at longer term treatments too. A good example of this is the Six Month Smile orthodontic treatment. As the name suggests, it can take an average of six months to correct some problems with crooked and uneven teeth, so starting your treatment now would give you a good chance of the treatment being completed by next spring. Every case is different though and in order to be sure to leave sufficient time, you will need to have your teeth examined by one of the dentists at our Burton and Ashby clinic in order to determine the most appropriate treatment for you. This may also be a good time to have teeth implants placed so that you have a good chance of the tooth being fully integrated in time for the next round of festivities at Christmas.

This is just a loose guide of course, and as stated earlier, treatments are available all year round to fit in with your plans. You may also be unsure of what treatments would give you the best opportunity to have a great looking smile in 2023 and, if this is the case, we are here to help you.
