Helping our Burton and Ashby patients achieve straight teeth smiles in shorter time

Orthodontics, or dental braces, as they are often more widely known, have come a long way since the days when the only option available were the metallic braces that were very visible as soon as you opened your mouth. There is now a wider choice to select from with most offering a great deal more discretion than previously. At Alexandra Dental Care, we offer a choice of some the most commonly used orthodontic systems and in today’s blog, we are going to focus on one of these which is known as the ‘Six Month Smile’

Not all braces are appropriate for all treatments. Some are designed to correct all of the teeth including those at the rear which are less visible. For many people though, the key reason to have their teeth straightened is that their teeth currently leave them with a crooked looking smile that they are unhappy about. Rather than use straighten all of the teeth then, some, like the Six Month Smiles system, focus on the front teeth that are most visible when we smile. For this reason, they are sometimes referred to as ‘cosmetic orthodontics’.

How quickly do they straighten teeth?

You might presume that the answer to this is in the name, but the truth is that the amount of time it will take depends on each individual situation. The ‘six months’ in the name is actually an average and you may well find that your treatment can be completed even more quickly. You may be thinking that even six months seems a long time, but do remember that you can’t apply too much pressure to move a tooth otherwise you risk significant damage. It is also worth remembering that full mouth teeth straightening can take two years or more.

How does it work?

This particular dental brace system works in a similar way to traditional braces, using wires and brackets to apply a gentle force to your teeth. The big difference between this and traditional metal braces is in the materials that are used. The Six Month Smiles system uses materials that are much more refined and are also made from a tooth coloured material that blends in well with your natural teeth, making the braces much less visible.

What problems can it be used for?

As stated before, this particular system focuses on the ‘social six’ teeth; that is the six teeth at the top and bottom that we reveal when we smile. Examples of problems that can be fixed this way include crowded teeth, minor underbites and overbites and even small gaps between the teeth. Although these might seem relatively minor, they can really have a negative impact on your smile.

How do I know if it’s suitable for my problem?

There is only one way to know this for sure and that is to make an appointment to see a dentist at our Swadlincote based practice, near Burton and Ashby. We will be able to examine your teeth and decide on the best approach to straighten them. We will also check your oral health as any problems, such as decay or gum disease will need to be resolved before your orthodontic treatment can be started. We should also be able to give you an estimate of how long your treatment period will last.

For those of you that would like to find out a little more about the Six Month Smiles system before contacting us, there are a couple of videos on the dental braces page of our website. These are worth watching to help you understand the benefits of this popular orthodontic system.
