Straighter teeth are seen as more attractive and maybe even more youthful but the benefits of a straighter smile do not end there. Having straighter teeth is the main reason patients opt for straightening treatments however there are many other benefits you should know about…

Increased self confidence

A straighter smile is seen as healthy and attractive and can make a big impact on your life by boosting self-esteem. In turn this may affect your life through interactions and job opportunities as your radiating confidence is apparent.  It is believed that part of making a good first impression is a confident smile, many surveys suggest that the initial physical feature noticed when meeting a person is their smile.

Healthier teeth and gums

Healthier teeth and gums are a major benefit of a straighter smile. Crooked teeth tend to trap plaque and debris due to the overlapping of teeth; this makes it more difficult to clean these areas. Plaque sitting between the teeth allows cavities to progress. As well as crowding, spacing between teeth also enables food to lodge, potentially causing decay. Gums become red and swollen due to harmful bacteria within plaque; if it is not removed adequately gum disease may arise. Straighter teeth instantly enables easier daily brushing and flossing  without those hard to reach areas, reducing the risk of dental problems occurring.

Less wear and tear

Daily our teeth have to withstand great amounts of pressure due to biting and chewing. If teeth are misaligned there may be an uneven distribution of pressure causing more stress on certain teeth. In time this heavy pressure wears the teeth down and can cause teeth to chip or fracture. Once teeth have worn there is no way of getting the natural tooth tissue back so preventing this from happening in the first place is preferred.

Improved overall health

As well as an improvement on oral hygiene, overall health can feel the benefits too. Many studies have discovered links between oral health and general health. There are various health conditions such as diabetes, stokes, heart disease and respiratory disease, which are known to be a possible cause or made worse by, poor oral hygiene. As discussed previously we know that crooked teeth are much more difficult to clean with the risk of cavities and gum disease being greater. An improved bite allows better chewing, potentially reducing gastrointestinal problems too.
