What’s It Really Like To Have Facial Aesthetics Treatment?

Our facial aesthetics team member, Dr Usha Sirdevi, addresses some common questions.

Quite a few of the patients who come to Alexandra Dental Care, curious as to what our facial aesthetics treatments can offer, understandably ask questions about Botox and dermal fillers. Most of these questions are about Botox, perhaps due to the publicity it has received in the media over the years.

To help patients make an informed choice as to whether these treatments are suitable for them, we attempt to answer some of these questions below. It is important to remind patients though, that they will need to have a consultation with us, prior to any treatment being given. This is also a great opportunity for our Ashby and Swadlincote patients to ask us any other questions that they may have.

Are anti-wrinkle treatments dangerous?

Whilst anti-wrinkle products are made from purified natural “toxins”, they are used in very small, safe quantities. We can assure all of our patients that the amount used in our anti wrinkle treatments is minimal, and our experienced facial aesthetics team will ensure that the procedure is carried out safely.

Will it make me look strange?

No doubt, patients that ask this question are referring to some of the stories they have seen in the media about the inability to smile, or the now infamous ‘trout pout’, following a treatment. In nearly all cases, these procedures will either have been carried out by an inexperienced or even unqualified practitioner. Alternatively, money may have persuaded some to carry out ‘extreme’ modifications. This will not happen at Alexandra Dental Care. You will be told what results can be expected and we also reserve the right to refuse any treatment which we feel is inappropriate or potentially dangerous.

Does it hurt?

All you will feel is a little pricking sensation as we introduce the products just beneath the skin. You may find there is some initial minor bruising which lasts for a few days, although this is entirely normal and nothing to worry about.

How old do I have to be?

Perhaps surprisingly, there are few laws regulating this treatment, although this will undoubtedly change in the near future. We understand that some younger people may be tempted to have facial aesthetics due to ‘celebrity’ endorsements and via social media. In reality though, you shouldn’t need to have any facial aesthetic treatments under the age of 18 and we would encourage patients under 18 not to seek it.

Can I have it if I’m pregnant?

Interestingly, you are perhaps less likely to want anti wrinkle treatment when you are pregnant. Aside from obvious other distractions, your body retains water more during pregnancy and this helps to reduce the visibility of lines and wrinkles. Although relatively small, there is a risk that Botox may harm the unborn child (low birth weight has been noted in some instances) and therefore we will not provide Botox to expecting mothers or those who are breastfeeding.

Hopefully, these will answer some of the more common questions patients have. We are always happy to address individual concerns though, so if you would like to meet one of our experienced facial treatments team, please call Alexandra Dental Care on 01283 216347 and we’ll be delighted to help.

Dr Usha Sirdevi is a dentist and a fully accredited anti wrinkle treatment provider (GDC 118845).
