The Benefits of CEREC

Faster Appointments for our Patients

CEREC is an aspect of dentistry which many of our patients may not have heard of. Essentially, it is a computerised in-house piece of machinery that can produce dental crowns and veneers without the need to wait for an external laboratory to produce them.

This has a number of benefits for our patients in Ashby, Burton, Derby and the surrounding areas, especially at the moment when time seems to be of increasing importance. By using CEREC technology, many more procedures can now be done in just a single visit to our Swadlincote practice.

Avoiding Bad Impressions

Previously, some patients have told us that they find having impressions taken to be an uncomfortable experience and although not painful, one which they would rather avoid if at all possible. Because CEREC uses CAD-CAM technology, there is now no need for impressions to be taken and a patient’s teeth can be scanned in just a few seconds using this latest technology.

It is not just because of the lack of need for an impression to be taken though that makes this such a quick and convenient method when crowns and veneers are needed. The following are some other areas where our patients can benefit from this new dental technology.

Single Visits

No one likes injections and very often, when crowns are to be attached, injections may need to be given at both appointments. Because with CEREC, the crowns are made whilst the patient waits, there is a need for just a single injection and a single visit. This also makes it much more convenient for those who find it difficult to take the time off work for two appointments or who have family needs that are difficult to manage.

Temporary Crowns

To protect a tooth after it has been prepared to receive a crown, it is usually necessary to fit a temporary crown. These are only a stopgap solution for the period whilst the final crown is being prepared but these cannot fit as well and some people find them awkward or inconvenient. With the use of CEREC technology, this is no longer necessary as the crown will be prepared as you wait and fitted before you leave the dental practice.

Invasiveness and Longevity

It is now generally accepted in the dental profession, that crowns made using the CEREC technique generally are stronger and last longer than those made in external laboratories. On top of this, usually, with CEREC prepared crowns, more of the original tooth can be preserved which, as well as being less invasive, means that the tooth is likely to be stronger and therefore last for longer.

White Fillings, Inlays and Onlays

CEREC can also be used to manufacture larger white restorations to replace the metallic coloured amalgam fillings which, whilst being strong and long lasting, are aesthetically undesirable. CEREC prepared restorations are now almost as strong as traditional amalgam and can be an additional benefit to give you that great smile that you have been looking for.

The use of CEREC at Alexandra Dental Care is just one example of how we invest in the latest dental technology to improve convenience for our patients.
