Porcelain Veneers For That ‘Perfect Smile’

If you are looking for your best possible smile, dental veneers might be the answer….

As we approach the warmer months and we start to think of summer holidays, we are also likely to think about how we can look our best for them as well as the other social gatherings that often occur when the weather is nicer.  New clothes can be bought of course and other things are relatively straightforward to give us a boost. Even the best clothes and hairstyles though can be spoiled if your teeth are stained or even cracked or chipped.

All teeth will discolour with age and this is just a physical fact of life. Discolouration can happen at any stage of our life if we eat or drink things that stain our teeth, but after a certain age, the dentin part of the tooth that lies below the enamel surface starts to darken in colour and this inevitably shows through the translucent enamel, giving our teeth a dull and often yellowing appearance.

Teeth whitening

The most straightforward treatment to rectify this is to have your teeth professionally whitened. This is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments that we provide for our Ashby and Burton patients at Alexandra Dental Care. It is certainly an excellent technique, being both non-invasive and repeatable when necessary, but it can’t rectify all visual problems that can occur with our teeth.

Some of us may have teeth that are chipped or have fine cracks in the surface of the enamel. Whilst these might not be deep enough to cause problems like decay, they can be quite visible and even a teeth whitening procedure may not hide them. Chipped teeth may be even more noticeable with whiter teeth as people are more likely to pay attention to a whiter smile.

So, what can you do to improve imperfect teeth?

Dental veneers

Not only are porcelain dental veneers great for providing patients who have heavily discoloured teeth with a whiter smile, but they can also correct other minor defects like cracks and chips. They can also lengthen shorter teeth where there has been wear that has caused this. Whilst the treatment itself is more invasive than a teeth whitening procedure, the effects are long lasting and it is a great way of giving yourself that smile you have always wanted.

To fit teeth veneers, it is first of all necessary to remove a fine layer of enamel from the front of the tooth. We use a local anaesthetic for this to minimise any discomfort that might be felt. Impressions are then taken of the prepared teeth and these are used by a special laboratory to produce your new veneers. You will be fitted with temporary veneers to protect your teeth in the meantime. The new veneers are usually returned to us within a week or so and we can then fit them for you. To do this, the temporary ones are removed and the new ones attached using a strong clinical adhesive. Finally, the veneers will be trimmed and polished to give them a great natural look.

For those of you who are thinking ‘but I don’t want really dazzling teeth’, please rest assured; we can produce these in any shade that you wish. For example, if you are happy with the current colour of your teeth, we can match the veneers to that. As the whiteness of veneers won’t fade as long as you brush them, you can maintain your current teeth colour without them darkening as may well have happened otherwise. Given that the high quality veneers that we use can last for ten years or more, before needing to be replaced, this is a great way of maintaining a white, attractive smile for a very long time.

Having healthy teeth and gums is, of course, the most important thing of all, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t want them to look as nice as you possibly can. The good news is that our Ashby, Swadlincote and Burton patients can benefit from the wide range of cosmetic treatments that we have available at our Swadlincote dentists.
