Protruding Front Teeth

Regaining a confident smile with Invisalign orthodontics

Protruding teeth, also sometimes referred to as ‘buck teeth’ are not uncommon, but, as those who have them would most likely agree, are not attractive and can cause quite a bit of embarrassment.

Whilst most people with protruding teeth can disguise the fact whilst their mouth is closed; more severe cases show the teeth even with a closed mouth. Even in the more relatively minor cases though, most of us have a natural desire to laugh and smile and to feel forced to not do so can be quite restrictive.

Causes

Whilst it is generally thought that buck teeth are caused by thumb sucking, research seems to indicate that this is not a major problem for children under about five years of age. Once the child starts getting their adult teeth though, soon after, any continued thumb sucking is likely to push the teeth forward, causing them to protrude.

Solutions

At Alexandra Dental Care, we have treated a number of patients from the Burton on Trent area who have come to us with protruding teeth. In the majority of cases, we are able to use one of our most popular orthodontic system (“braces”) to return the teeth to their correct position.

By using Invisalign braces, not only are we able to restore the patient’s smile, but to do so without the obvious appearance of traditional dental braces.

Invisalign ‘braces’ are actually a series of transparent trays which fit on top of the patient’s natural teeth. Each is designed to reposition the teeth just a little and is worn for approximately two weeks. The tray is then removed and replaced with the next in the series until the problem is fully corrected.

Because of the transparency of the trays, the braces are barely visible and, unless you advise others that you are wearing them, the likelihood is that few will notice them at all.

Other benefits

As well as an improved smile and improved confidence once the teeth have been corrected, there are other potential benefits too.

Protruding teeth are more susceptible to damage, especially if you play sports. As they become, in effect, more prominent, they are likely to be first in line for any damage should a ball hit you in the mouth for example.

Another benefit that one or two of our patients from Burton on Trent have mentioned is that, once the protruding teeth had been rectified, they noticed that their ‘overhanging top lip’ appearance had also vanished, improving not only their smile but their general facial appearance.
