Helping Anxious Burton And Ashby Dental Patients

Being afraid of the dentist is common, but we are here to help….

We are fairly sure that some people have been afraid of visiting the dentist for hundreds of years, probably since the very first dental practices were established. Certainly, the various implements that can be seen on display in museums, from Victorian dental practices particularly, are enough to make the bravest person break out in a cold sweat.

Even now though, with highly skilled dentists, and modern dental equipment, a small number of patients still find it challenging to maintain regular dental appointments due to their dental anxiety.

At Alexandra Dental Care, we are well aware of their concerns and we do all that we can to make all visits, whether a routine check or extensive procedure, as comfortable as possible for all patients.

A warm welcome

As soon as you enter our dental practice, you will be warmly welcomed by our reception team, and, once details have been taken, you will be invited to wait in our comfortable waiting rooms. This area has been designed not only to be practical and comfortable, but in a way that helps to ease anxiety a little. For some patients, simple things like this can really help to reassure and make them feel more confident about their visit.

Chairside care

For a lot of patients, taking a seat in the dental chair is where the anxiety really begins. All of our dentists are experienced and trained in treating nervous patients and will treat you in a calm and relaxing manner. We are always happy to answer any questions that you have to help to put you at ease and you will be encouraged to raise your hand should you be in discomfort at any point during the procedure.

Fear of injections is a common anxiety and we may use a surface gel which starts the numbing process on the gum and which makes it less uncomfortable when the injection is given.

Should your dental anxiety be severe, or for lengthier procedures such as dental implant placement, you may wish to consider sedation.

IV Sedation

Dental practices in the UK no longer use a general anaesthesia and modern local anaesthetics are powerful enough to prevent you from feeling any significant discomfort. In most instances, it is the anticipation of pain rather than any actual pain, that causes patients to become anxious.

As an alternative, we are pleased to offer anxious Burton and Ashby patients the option of having IV sedation to help them through any procedure that they may need. This is a simple needle into the back of the hand, through which a sedative is administered. This will not put you to sleep but you will be in a totally relaxed state for the duration of your procedure. It is important that you bring a responsible adult with you to make sure that you get home safely as the sedative will remain in your system for approximately 24 hours.
