Better Confidence With Dental Implants

One of the many ways our Burton patients can benefit from this tooth replacement method.

For many years, dentures were seen as the only viable option for replacing missing teeth. Very rudimentary dentures have been discovered that were made around 700BC and were made from either animal or human bone. It is highly likely that these were produced for cosmetic purposes only and would have had little or no role to play in the breaking down of food. Modern dentures, made from porcelain, have been around since the late 1700s.

Whilst these dentures offered patients an alternative to having a visible gap in their teeth, their practicality would also have been limited. Without access to modern-day equipment, such as we have here at Alexandra Dental Care, it is likely that these dentures would have been quite loose fitting and offering limited practical use.

However, even modern dentures can move around in the mouth a little, as the patient’s bone structure changes following tooth loss. This can cause people to avoid certain foods,  and may well result in a loss of confidence when in social circles too.

Dental implants

Although dental implants are a relatively recent development in the world of dental care, with the first implant being placed in 1965; they have become very popular as word of their success has spread. Unlike dentures and the other tooth replacement option, a bridge, dental implants not only replace the actual visible part of the tooth, but the root also.

This part of the process offers some major benefits once the implant has fully integrated into the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration. Not only does it provide an extremely strong base upon which a crown can be attached, but also means that bone loss in the jaw is avoided. This helps to maintain the patient’s usual appearance as the jaw bone does not degrade.

Confidence benefits

Most people who have had dental implants placed will actually forget that they have them for the majority of the time. Unlike dentures, where the patient may feel that they are about to move at an inconvenient point during a conversation or whilst eating, dental implants are extremely strong and secure. You will soon become used to the fact that they simply will not move, no matter what food you are eating. Of course, implants do require after care to avoid problems such as peri-implantitis, but any issues can be minimised with good regular care including brushing, flossing and your regular dental checks.

If you are fed up of your dentures coming loose, or, if you have a gap in the teeth and would like to discover more about the dental implant procedure and how you can benefit from it, why not call Alexandra Dental Care today on 01283 216347 to arrange a free non clinical consultation to discuss your options with us?
